Structural ceramics

Due to its empirical formula, ceramic is known to be extremely durable. They can be used in the manufacturing of bricks, dinnerware, and statues. They are essentially made up of clay and moulded into different shapes through extreme pressure. Additionally, it is a good insulator of heat, although it’s a variable dependent on the density. The density can be altered in the course of development from clay to glass, a process known as vitrification. Its density intensifies based on the result; the more glass, the higher the density. This can be easily achieved through high temperature of heating.

Refractory ceramics

Refractory ceramics are known to have the extraordinary quality of withstanding high temperatures. It can retain its form and strength even in furnaces and kilns, like in the case of molten metal. It is primarily made by using oxides like titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, zinc oxide and other diverse types of oxides. Pure oxides are said to have very high refractory properties but due to the steep price, it is combined with other compounds to compensate for the cost.

Clay products

As the name suggests, it is principally made up of clay. It is obtained by firing clay at a high temperature. They are used in the making of pottery and utensils, mostly for traditional household items. They have a high density but low insulating capacity.

Industry used ceramics

Since ceramic is magnetic, coarse, and can resist electric shocks, they are used in the industrial environment. Owing to its properties, they come in handy for various magnetic and electrical operations. Ceramics can either possess low or high conductivity. The conductivity is directly proportional to the temperature as conduction is based on the movement of cations and anions. Sufficient energy is fuelled by ample thermal heating that causes the swift movement of the ions.

Abrasive ceramics

Abrasive, meaning it is rasping and can be used to cut other materials. It is hardy and resistant to wear and tear. Sturdiness is a mandatory requirement here. They can be either natural or synthetic. Examples include materials like silicon carbide, tungsten, and diamond.
