    What is Tree Pollarding?

When it comes to garden and tree maintenance, tree pollarding is an important thing to take care of and it is something that goes back centuries.

In fact, it is a tree maintenance method that stems back to medieval times, and it involves pruning back the upper branches of trees which enabled them to access a constant supply of wood which would then be used to make fires and for weaving.

These days, pollarding is used by tree specialists to maintain the size of trees and shrubs, ensuring they stay smaller than they would usually grow. Therefore, the main aim of pollarding is to maintain the health of trees and to keep gardens looking smart and attractive.

When it comes to tree surveys in Essex, they might recommend that tree pollarding is required to keep your trees healthy, this makes it important to choose a company that you can rely on. With this in mind, what is tree pollarding?

    It Helps to Rejuvenate Trees

When thin and weak branches are thinned out, it enables the tree to put more focus on helping other parts of the tree to strengthen. One of the biggest benefits of pollarding is that it can help to remove damaged or dead parts of the tree which also includes branches that could be a hazard over time. In time, pollarding can help trees to thrive when they would have otherwise looked as though they were going to die.

Help Healthy Plants Below the Tree Grow

For trees that have not been pollarded, they can cause problems for plants and shrubs located beneath them. They can prevent light from reaching these plants and they act as a canopy. If you opt to carry out pollarding, this will encourage light to reach the ground beneath as well as air, all of which will help those plants to grow and thrive. Furthermore, it will help the garden to feel as though it is more spacious.

    Improve Foliage

At eye level, you might be looking at spindly branches that are unsightly but with pollarding, it can help encourage the growth of new foliage at lower levels. When you increase foliage, it will transform your garden and make the space look completely different.

    Enhance Space in the Garden

When a tree is allowed to grow both horizontally and vertically, it can take up space in your garden and that can mean that you are not getting as much from it as possible. Pollarding will enable you to create more space and improve the way in which you use your space.

Improve the Balance of a Tree

Some trees can be top heavy which means that they become a risk for nearby buildings and people. This is especially true when it comes to high winds but with pollarding, it can help to reduce the tree canopy and its exposure to wind which means that the tree will be able to handle wind and extreme weather a lot better.

    Improves Safety

It is important that trees are kept away from utilities such as telephone lines, electricity lines and street lighting as this poses a serious risk. As a landowner, you might be responsible for ensuring that your tree does not interfere with these which means pollarding could provide a feasible solution.
